India’s Mental Health Revolution to Reach the Grassroots

The Catholic Mental Health Ministry (CMHM), a leading NGO based in Bangalore, is at the forefront of India’s mental health revolution. With a bold vision of "Mental Health for All", CMHM is transforming the mental health landscape by addressing the needs of the most marginalized populations through psychosocial interventions at the grassroots level.
India continues to face critical mental health challenges due to the lack of accessible services, financial constraints, limited early identification, and widespread stigma. CMHM is bridging this gap by focusing on three foundational pillars: Education, Support, and Advocacy. Through these pillars, CMHM offers holistic care to children, youth, and families facing emotional and behavioural issues.

Core Services Provided by CMHM
  • • Financial Aid
CMHM supports individuals with mental health challenges by covering the cost of medicines and medical treatment, especially for those unable to afford care.
  • • Counselling and Medical Intervention
Individuals suffering from psychological distress are offered counselling services, along with professional medical care, ensuring integrated mental health support.
  • • Treatment Access
CMHM partners with local institutions and medical professionals to facilitate quality treatment for people who lack financial means.
  • • Educational Support
For students from families affected by mental illness, CMHM offers:
  • o School supplies and tuition
  • o Transportation assistance
  • o Nutritional support
  • This ensures that mental health does not become a barrier to education and future opportunity.
  • • Shelter and Dignity
Through generous donor support, CMHM builds houses for individuals with mental illnesses who have no place to call home—restoring dignity and providing a safe space for recovery.
  • • Capacity Building and Training
Recognizing the acute shortage of mental health professionals in India, CMHM invests in training and certifying counsellors across the country.
The long-term vision is to have:
  • o At least one counsellor in every village to address community-level mental health issues
  • o One counsellor in every school to identify and intervene early in emotional and behavioural challenges among children, helping them build resilience and healthy coping skills
CMHM’s work represents a compassionate and systematic approach to healing minds and communities. By promoting mental well-being through a blend of care, education, and advocacy, CMHM is laying the foundation for a mentally healthier India—from the grassroots up.
